MFAはメディック・ファースト・エイド®の略称です。MFAは救急医療の先進国、アメリカで25年以上も前に誕生した一般市民レベルの応急救護の手当の訓練プログラムであり、そのソフト（ノウハウ）とハード（教材などの伝達媒体）は数年ごとに最新の医学的、そして教育学的情報を盛り込んでアップデートを続けています。
現在ではその画期的にして卓越した教育内容と有効性により、国連関連組織・世界安全機構（WSO）をはじめ、アメリカ沿岸警備隊（日本の海上保安庁にあたる）やカナダ・ロイヤル・ライフセービング協会、ガールスカウトUSA、DAN JAPAN（財団法人 日本海洋レジャー安全・振興協会）など、様々な公的機関や団体の多くから公認され、7カ国に設置された国際サービス・オフィスを通して世界中に普及しています。
と説明があるとおり簡単に言えば応急救護の講習である。CPRやAEDの使用方法 けがやその他の肉体的損傷に対する応急処置のやり方を実践を中心に身につけようという講座である。
私がこれを最初に受講したのは2年前。今回はちょうど更新の時期ということもあり、MFAの講習を受けに行ってきた。
元々、会社での利用（製造業で怪我に対する応急処置や高年齢者の生活習慣病から来る災害）などのために役に立つかと思ったのと、趣味で海に出る為、海上でなにか災害に遭ってしまうと、陸に着くのに2時間程度かかることから受講を決意したのがきっかけだ。
最初の講習で予想以上のおもしろさと、実用性を認識した。今回は会社の役席者にも受講させようと考えていたのだが、時期的に繁忙期であった為、今回は一人で更新してきた。
